Be a Parent Governor!
In Who runs your school? we explain how the School Governors operate. Now and again a Parent Governor will leave and an invitation will go out to parents for nominations for a new Parent Governor.
Any parent can be a Governor you just need to be motivated, willing to learn and have enough free time for 3 - 4 meetings each term (and a few training courses). If you are interested, this is what you should do:
- Tell the Head Teacher that you are interested and ask for more information
- Ask if you can phone the Chairman and have a chat about how your Governing Body operates. You should know what you are getting into. (It should be an open and fair forum where everyone can contribute and feel appreciated if it's overly political or dominated by the Head Teacher then it won't be much fun.)
- Check out the Governors' website at www.governornet.co.uk or you could call GovernorLine on 08000 722181
Talk to the other Parent Governors - there's usually a list of them in the school's reception
Don't be put off by the language and complexity of the system you will learn what you need as you go along and nobody will expect you to understand everything at first. All you will be required to do is be enthusiastic and to put across your points of view from your stand point.
Think carefully about the commitment it's a serious job and you will be expected to do it for at least 4 years (the time will fly)! And if you're still keen:
- Submit your nomination form to the school secretary if there is more than one nominee for one position, it will go to a vote.
Good Luck!
