For a top family day out, try Longleat.

Getting there ?
Longleat is fairly expensive for a family day out but they offer several options to make it an attractive proposition (go to www.longleat.co.uk) Also, Tesco Club Points make it a really inexpensive visit (go to www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals).
The Longleat website gives a very comprehensive 'how to find us' guide with maps and public transport details.
We travelled there from Berkshire and found the journey very manageable for three children, a grandmother and mother. There was plenty to see en route and dvd's and cd's kept the children occupied. Longleat is easy to find and the access is very straightforward (once you have found the actual entrance!) Lord Bath please note!
The entry to the Park is then straightforward, organised and very friendly. Just follow the directions, go to the right kiosk, and you'll be on your way! You will be given a Visitor's Pack. Do open it before you start your drive. We didn't so we missed the excellent CD they provide which explains what you can see all round the route of the Park.
At this point I suggest you park beyond the entrance and make for the loos the children (and Gran) may need them - They are excellent and it will be the last opportunity before you embark on your drive around the Park. (You cannot leave the vehicle from this point onwards!).
Our Opinion ?
It was heaven! An absolute delight! So well organised and Visitor Friendly! Everything seemed to have been thought of to make sure you could see all the animals, the beautiful scenery, the amazing bird life and all so close at hand. A near head-on encounter with one of the Rhinos brought it home just how much freedom the animals have and how lucky we were to be able to get so close and yet feel so safe. There were wardens at hand all over the Park (inconspicuous most of the time but there, in the blink of an eye, if an animal decided to become too friendly!
Fabulous food for the whole family
There were abundant facilities on hand to ensure that the young and old could get to the loos quickly. The big, friendly, bustling Restaurant with its friendly staff and great HOME COOKED FOOD was a bonus with a good selection of snacks and meals for all and at a REASONABLE COST. Amenities for babies, children and grown ups were excellent.
Only downside of the visit was THE MAZE. We had a four year old, a seven year old and a nine year old. The nine year old got lost and it was really scary. I would not recommend letting younger children go off on their own.
Although it is well sign posted it is not easy for a youngster to get out.
This is a day for everyone, wear comfortable clothes and shoes and enjoy!!
We're already planning our next visit.
