National Curriculum

Early Learning Goals

How can you help at home?

There is no strict 'curriculum' at this stage, but there is a well-guided programme of learning to prepare your child.

If your child is between 3 and 5 years old then he/she is at the Foundation Stage of their education.

The aim of this stage is to teach basic skills through play, speaking, listening, music, dance, stories and counting.

Early Learning Goals

There are no tests or pressures on your children at this stage they will be learning across broad subject areas, through fun activities and projects.  The goals are there to help teachers cover all the development areas in preparation for your child moving through Reception into Key Stage One (ages 6-7).  The areas are:

Skills developed?

What will they learn?

Personal, social and emotional development

Confidence, right and wrong, understanding their own needs, taking an interest, dressing and undressing

Communication, language and literacy

Clear and confident speech*, to enjoy stories and poems, learning sounds and linking them to the alphabet

Mathematical Development

An understanding through play and stories, understanding concepts such as 'heavier', 'smaller?, and recognising shapes

Knowledge and understanding of the world

Exploring the world around them and asking questions, everyday technology, cultures and beliefs, own family history**

Physical development

Moving confidently, handling equipment

Creative development

Colours, shapes, making things telling stories, making music and dancing.

* If you have any worries about your child's speech / hearing then do seek professional advice as soon as possible.   The school can help you here by referring you to the right health professional.

** Adoptive parents beware ' your child may be asked to bring in baby photos or historical family items ' just be prepared!

How can you help at home?

  • Keep up with classroom projects and activities often you will be required to send things in and your chidren might not always remember the details!
  • Follow the activities through at home e.g. schools often have a 'letter of the week' which you can adopt at home, through 'I spy' games or creative activities painting letter forms, making them into animals etc.
  •  You can buy books and activities at many shops to help your children.  As this ends up being quite pricey, we've developed a wide range of activity sheets for members to download - see Join Us Today on the Home page.
