How to complain

Keep cool.  Keep calm.  Keep clear-headed.

We all have times when we need to complain about something.  Your school should be keen to answer your queries and address any problems you put to them.  Just remember that they are (usually) on your side!  So start positive and be assertive but not aggressive in your approach.

  • Start with the class teacher by arranging a time to see him/her.  Put your issue to them clearly and wait to hear their point of view.
  • If you think you have a solution, present it to the school now.
  • If you are unhappy with how they try to resolve your issues, then arrange to see the Head Teacher.
  • At this point, depending upon the issue, the Head may have suggested a plan of action which you should really consider trying for an agreed period.  Make sure you agree a date to review these actions.
  • If you're still unhappy, then you can speak to the Chairman of the Governing Body who should be willing to help you.
  • If you're still not happy, then maybe you should either approach your LEA (if it's a state school) or start looking for another school check out finding a school.
  • If your concern is to do with Special Needs, then look at our feature on how to appeal.
