Who runs your school?
The Governing Body
State Schools
Independent schools
Private Nurseries
Your school is managed by a team of people called Governors. The structure of the Board of Governors depends on the type of school, but they are usually made up of teachers, parents, LEA representatives and other local people. All of these people are elected and none of them are paid to carry out this function.
The Chair of
the Board of Governors leads the team, supported by a Deputy and a Clerk. The Clerk is usually the school secretary
they carry out all of the administration for the Board but do not contribute or
vote in the meetings. The Head Teacher is obviously key to the running of the school and plays a major part in the
Governing Body activities, but is not actually a Governor.
The Board of
Governors usually meets once each term as a group, with many committee meetings
running throughout the year to get the work done. The Board is responsible for managing every
aspect of the school from the finance, the curriculum and Special Needs Policy to trimming the hedges
and painting the toilets. As there is so much to be done, the work is divided up
for committees to manage and each Governor usually sits on three or four of
these.

Private Nurseries are privately owned businesses. Most are registered with Ofsted, monitored and regulated but are not normally run by a board of Governors.
