choosing a childminder

We are currently updating this page - in the meantime, a great source of information is your nearest Children's Information Service (CIS) - to be found at your local library.

Childminding - our tips

Having been on the giving and receiving end of childminding, here are some suggestions I can offer on choosing the right childminder for YOUR child:

  • before you interview anyone, think carefully about the service you want and write down the details, e.g.
    • times/days
    • holidays
    • activities
    • pick up/drop off arrangements
    • outings
    • safety - car seats/buggies etc
    • pets
    • cost ( can range from '4 to '7 per hour)
  • keep top of mind exactly what you want for your child and how you would care for them during this time
  • ask friends for recommendations and get a list from the borough of local approved childminders (also check out National Childminding Association)
  • interview 2 - 3 candidates or as many until you find the right one
  • try and see them in their home (this is where they will mind your child) and meet the other chidren who will be around
  • once you have chosen one, DO FOLLOW UP REFERENCES, and double-check with the borough
  • meet again with your chosen childminder to agree a contract, consider:
    • sickness policy
    • accident procedures
    • sleeping accommodation
    • other children minded by your childminder now or in the future
    • a trial period of a month
  • remember, you are in charge - if you're not happy, find someone else.
