We are currently updating this page - in the meantime, a great source of information is your nearest Children's Information Service (CIS) - to be found at your local library.
Having been on the giving and receiving end of childminding, here are some suggestions I can offer on choosing the right childminder for YOUR child:
- before you interview anyone, think carefully about the service you want and write down the details, e.g.
- times/days
- holidays
- activities
- pick up/drop off arrangements
- outings
- safety - car seats/buggies etc
- pets
- cost ( can range from '4 to '7 per hour)
- keep top of mind exactly what you want for your child and how you would care for them during this time
- ask friends for recommendations and get a list from the borough of local approved childminders (also check out National Childminding Association)
- interview 2 - 3 candidates or as many until you find the right one
- try and see them in their home (this is where they will mind your child) and meet the other chidren who will be around
- once you have chosen one, DO FOLLOW UP REFERENCES, and double-check with the borough
- meet again with your chosen childminder to agree a contract, consider:
- sickness policy
- accident procedures
- sleeping accommodation
- other children minded by your childminder now or in the future
- a trial period of a month
- remember, you are in charge - if you're not happy, find someone else.
